Alaan has introduced features like AI agents for receipt matching, memo population, and VAT compliance, aiming to automate manual finance tasks for businesses.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Alaan’s success reflects MENA’s massive digital transformation opportunity
The US$48 million funding round highlights a fundamental mismatch in the MENA region: while 88% of the population is online daily and 94% own smartphones, only 8% of small and medium enterprises have an online presence compared to 80% in the US1.
This digital divide extends beyond basic connectivity to sophisticated business tools like expense management platforms, where regional companies have historically relied on outdated systems built elsewhere and retrofitted for local markets.
The region has realized only 8% of its digital potential compared to 15% in Western Europe and 18% in the US, suggesting enormous room for growth for companies like Alaan that build locally-focused solutions1.
Investment appetite is clearly growing to bridge this gap, with MENA seeing a 30% increase in investors from 2015 to 2017 and total startup funding more than doubling in the same period1.
2️⃣ AI-focused positioning aligns with regional economic transformation plans
Alaan’s emphasis on AI agents for finance automation comes at a strategic time when Middle Eastern governments are heavily investing in artificial intelligence as part of economic diversification efforts.
PwC projects that AI could contribute up to $320 billion to the Middle East economy by 2030, with the UAE expecting close to 14% of its GDP to come from AI and Saudi Arabia projected to gain $135.2 billion in absolute terms2.
