🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The founder’s new venture uses lessons from his earlier startup’s economics
- Kabeer Biswas’s earlier startup, Dunzo, became a cultural phenomenon, and its name turned into a verb for getting things done 1.
- Even with that reach, Dunzo’s hyperlocal delivery model was expensive to run. It burned as much as US$3 million a month, and it posted a 1.7 billion rupees (US$18.1 million) loss on 35 million rupees (US$374,000) in revenue for the year ended March 2019 1.
- That experience with a high-burn, low-margin business helps explain why Biswas has started M, a company built around AI to automate household tasks 2.
- M plans to handle travel bookings and restaurant reservations, moving away from costly logistics toward software that can scale with fewer physical assets 2, 1.
The shift from delivery work to AI task management offers a new approach for convenience tech
- This funding marks a step back from hyperlocal logistics, where low-value orders can cost more to fulfill than they bring in 1.
- M is working on the coordination layer and using AI to manage tasks, without running a delivery network 2.
- This move from physical operations to software could give other startups in high-burn sectors a simpler model to follow.
- It also suggests investors now favor software businesses that can scale more easily, even in everyday convenience services 1.
