Peak XV-backed EV battery firm faces debt, layoffs, pivot woes

Log9 Materials, an EV battery startup backed by Peak XV and Petronas Ventures, is facing financial difficulties. Despite raising over US$60 million, the company is burdened by debt, legal disputes, and significant layoffs.

The crisis stems from its focus on fast-charging lithium-titanate (LTO) batteries, a niche and expensive technology with limited global adoption. These batteries have also been reported as unsuitable for India’s climate.

To address customer complaints, Log9 shifted to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries last year. However, the pivot worsened its financial strain, with rising debt and shrinking cash reserves.

The company is now facing legal battles, has cut a large portion of its workforce, and is reportedly selling parts of the business to stay afloat.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Battery chemistry selection proved critical for EV market fit in India

Log9’s strategic misstep with Lithium-titanate (LTO) batteries reveals how technology choices must align with market conditions to succeed.

The company bet on LTO technology despite its significantly higher cost—approximately $1.5 per watt-hour compared to just $0.4 for the more widely adopted LFP batteries 1.

While LTO batteries offer superior cycle life (up to 30,000 cycles versus 2,000-3,000 for LFP) and faster charging capabilities, these advantages couldn’t overcome the substantial price premium in the cost-sensitive Indian market 2.

This case demonstrates how even well-funded hardware startups must carefully balance technological advantages against market requirements and consumer affordability.

2️⃣ Manufacturing complexity magnifies startup failure risks

Log9’s struggles highlight the heightened challenges hardware and manufacturing startups face compared to software ventures.

The company’s dependence on Chinese equipment and technology created vulnerabilities in their supply chain and limited their ability to rapidly iterate on product designs 3.

This parallels findings from startup failure studies showing that hardware-focused companies often struggle with capital-intensive operations—76% of failed startups had received funding but still cited running out of cash as a primary reason for closure 4.

Log9’s multiple pivots (from aluminum-air fuel cells to LTO batteries to finally LFP) each required significant retooling and manufacturing adjustments, creating compounding financial pressures as the company attempted to keep pace with changing market demands 5.
