Paytm Services CEO resigns after 5 years in role

Varun Sridhar has resigned as CEO of Paytm Services, a subsidiary of India-based fintech firm One 97 Communications, after five years in the role.

Sridhar joined Paytm before its IPO and oversaw the development of its financial services business, including Paytm Money.

His responsibilities included working on initiatives such as daily mutual fund SIPs, digital gold, and secured lending products.

Prior to Paytm, Sridhar worked at BNP Paribas, where he led the acquisition and integration of Sharekhan.

Paytm Money is now led by Sandiip Bharadwaj and reported 195.7 crore rupee (US$23.5 million) in revenue and 71.6 crore rupee (US$8.59 million) profit for FY24.

The company remains behind competitors like Groww, Zerodha, and Dhan in user growth.

In a LinkedIn post, Sridhar said he plans to reflect on his next move, and is considering options such as launching a wealthtech venture, exploring AI-driven education, or taking a sabbatical before returning to the startup space.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Paytm Money’s leadership change reflects the challenges of competing in India’s concentrated stockbroking market

Sridhar’s departure comes as Paytm Money faces significant scale disadvantages despite achieving profitability.

The platform has just 689,000 active users compared to market leaders Groww’s 13.16 million and Zerodha’s 8.12 million users2.

Even with Rs 71.6 crore in profit during FY24, Paytm Money operates at roughly 5% of Groww’s user base, highlighting how the Indian stockbroking market has become increasingly concentrated1.

The top three brokers now control 58.67% of the market, making it difficult for smaller players to achieve the scale needed for sustainable growth2.

This concentration means that even well-executed businesses like Paytm Money, which Sridhar helped turn profitable, face structural headwinds in attracting and retaining users against much larger competitors with deeper resources and broader market reach.

2️⃣ Executive transitions in fintech often follow periods of regulatory pressure and market volatility
