Paytm Q1 UPI value jumps 45% on AI, redesign
Paytm, an Indian digital payments and financial services company, said a simpler app and AI-led features helped lift consumer Unified Payments Interface gross transaction value by 45% year on year to 590,000 rupees (US$6,100) crore in the fiscal first quarter.
Monthly transacting users also rose by 6 million to 80 million.
Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said Paytm is prioritising app experience and retention over pushing individual financial products.
In the same quarter, operating revenue rose 28% to 24.5 billion rupees (US$254 million).
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) climbed 182% to 2 billion rupees (US$21 million), while profit after tax increased 79% to 2.2 billion rupees (US$22.8 million).
Paytm said its consumer UPI growth was about 2.2x the broader market.
India’s overall UPI transaction value grew 20.59% year on year in FY2025-26, according to government data citing the National Payments Corporation of India.
UPI payments have largely operated under a zero-merchant discount rate regime since 2020, limiting direct merchant fees for payment apps, although the government is considering MDR for large merchants at 5-7 basis points.
