PayPay valuation could hit $20b in US IPO: sources
SoftBank is preparing to list PayPay, its Japanese payments app operator, in a US IPO as early as December, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Investors see 2 trillion yen (US$13.17 billion) as a baseline for PayPay’s valuation, but expect it could surpass 3 trillion yen (US$20 billion), with final figures depending on market conditions.
SoftBank has been meeting with institutional investors since mid-September to discuss potential valuations in the IPO.
PayPay leads Japan’s QR code payments market and recently began allowing users to make payments abroad, starting with South Korea.
PayPay, backed by several SoftBank entities, acquired a 40% stake in the Japanese business of Binance and is taking steps to bolster its cryptocurrency business.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
PayPay valuation leans on domestic gains with uncertain overseas upside
- The 2–3 trillion yen range sets a 2 trillion yen base from Japan growth. SoftBank Corp.’s financial segment that includes PayPay posted 18.1 billion yen in operating profit in April–June so prices above the base assume earnings beyond that.
- In South Korea, the first cross-border payments use existing networks, not a standalone build. That reliance on partners could trim margins and blur branding versus what it enjoys at home.
- Cashless use topped 40% in Japan last year, while South Korea and China are above 80%. The home market may have less headroom, so a richer valuation rests on wins in places with different rivals and habits.
Payment firms should add PayPay to reach Japanese tourists
- The South Korea launch opens a near-term path for point-of-sale vendors and payment service providers (companies that process payments for merchants) in busy tourist areas. Stores on networks that already handle the wallet can win more sales from Japanese travelers.
- Travel and retail in popular spots for Japanese visitors should switch on PayPay via supported networks soon. Early moves make it easier to catch demand as the wallet works abroad.
- FinTech builders of cross-border tools should study how the wallet balances fraud control with ease. Check identity verification and currency display. Review foreign exchange transparency and login security when localizing for international use.
