PayPal targets $1.5b in savings with job cuts

PayPal said on May 5 it plans to cut costs and jobs to save at least US$1.5 billion over the next two to three years as its new CEO Enrique Lores tries to improve performance after stronger competition.

The fintech company also reported first-quarter adjusted earnings per share of US$1.34, above analysts’ estimates of US$1.27, while transaction margin dollars rose 3% to US$3.81 billion.

PayPal reiterated its full year guidance and said it recently reorganized business lines as it looks to simplify operations and reinvest in technology.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

PayPal is using AI while giving Venmo its own lane

  • PayPal is setting up Venmo as its own reporting segment, which gives a clearer read on the app’s results and could make a sale simpler 1.
  • CEO Alex Chriss has framed the effort as an AI-led turnaround and said PayPal must become a “technology company again” 2.
  • PayPal expects to save at least US$1.5 billion over the next two to three years through AI-based process changes and a leaner structure 3. Planned job cuts could reach about 20% over that span, or more than 4,500 roles 3.
  • The overhaul comes after PayPal shares fell about 80% from their pandemic peak. The company has hired bankers amid takeover interest that has included Stripe, a payments company that helps businesses process online transactions 1.

A separate Venmo could raise pressure on other fintech firms

  • Pulling out Venmo puts more focus on what analysts have described as PayPal’s most valuable standalone asset 4.
  • Venmo has nearly 100 million users, which could make it appealing to buyers including Stripe 1.
  • A sale or spin-off could bring in cash or give PayPal a tighter focus as it pushes AI work and cost cuts. The company has not announced plans to sell Venmo 1.
  • The change may push other fintech groups with several business lines to rethink their setups, which could lead to more breakups as they try to lift shareholder value and keep up with faster rivals 4.
