PayPal-owned Venmo outperforms rival app in Q1 2025 earnings

Earnings reports from PayPal and Block this week showed different results for their peer-to-peer payment services, Venmo and Cash App.

PayPal reported a 20% revenue increase for Venmo in Q1 2025, along with a 10% rise in total payment volume. The growth was driven by features like its debit card, instant transfers, and integration with online checkouts.

Venmo also saw a 60% increase in debit card payment volume and a 50% rise in “Pay with Venmo” transactions.

Meanwhile, Block reported a 10% increase in gross profit for Cash App, reaching US$1.38 billion. However, its gross payment volume of US$56.8 billion missed the US$58 billion forecast.

CEO Jack Dorsey pointed to a lack of focus on network growth and user engagement. He also noted challenges in promoting Cash App as a full banking platform, especially in fund access and movement.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ P2P payment apps evolving from social networks to full banking alternatives

The contrasting fortunes of Venmo and Cash App highlight the evolution of peer-to-peer payment services into comprehensive financial platforms seeking profitability beyond simple transfers.

Venmo’s 20% revenue growth (outpacing its 10% payment volume growth) demonstrates successful monetization through services like debit cards, which saw payment volume increase by over 60% and monthly active users grow by approximately 40% 1.

This evolution reflects a broader industry trend where P2P platforms increasingly function as banking alternatives, with 60% of US consumers now using these apps for bill payments rather than just social transfers 2.

For context, Venmo processed about $35 billion in transactions back in 2017, and today’s competitive landscape represents a dramatic expansion in both scale and functionality as these platforms race to capture more financial activities from traditional banks 3.

The push for monetization has become critical as these companies balance growth with profitability, explaining why Jack Dorsey specifically highlighted the need to improve Cash App’s perception as a true banking platform rather than just a transfer tool 1.

2️⃣ Battle for consumer loyalty intensifies as switching barriers remain low

Despite significant investment in building financial ecosystems, P2P payment platforms face persistent challenges in maintaining user loyalty, with Cash App’s current struggles highlighting how quickly momentum can shift.

Research shows only 8% of P2P users indicate they would switch platforms within a year, yet the primary reason for switching remains alignment with friends and family networks, suggesting social factors still outweigh feature differences 4.
