US payment platform Lava raises $5.8m seed funding

Lava, a US-based startup founded by Mitchell Jones, has raised US$5.8 million in seed funding to develop a digital wallet designed for AI-driven payments.

The round was led by Lerer Hippeau, with participation from Harlem Capital, Streamlined Ventures, and Westbound.

Lava allows merchants to accept usage credits from customers, enabling AI agents to make payments across multiple services without repeated transaction approvals.

The platform aims to let users pay once for credits that can be used with any participating merchant or foundational AI model, such as GPT or Claude.

Jones, who previously founded Lendtable and Parable, created Lava after encountering difficulties managing subscriptions and payments while building AI applications.

The company plans to use the new capital for hiring, product development, and go-to-market activities.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Major payment companies are betting big on AI agent commerce

Lava enters a market where established payment giants are already making significant investments in AI-driven transactions.

Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal are all exploring AI-driven commerce solutions, indicating that major industry players recognize this as a fundamental shift rather than a niche opportunity1.

The momentum extends beyond payment processors. PwC’s recent survey found that 88% of executives plan to increase AI-related budgets due to agentic AI, with 79% already adopting AI agents in some capacity2.

This widespread corporate adoption suggests that Jones identified a real market need at the right time, as enterprises are actively seeking infrastructure to support autonomous AI transactions.

The combination of established payment infrastructure and emerging AI capabilities creates a substantial addressable market for solutions like Lava’s unified payment system.

2️⃣ Current payment systems create significant friction for AI agents

Jones’s $400 experiment that led to Lava reflects a broader technical challenge that existing payment infrastructure wasn’t designed to handle.
