Panasonic invests $374m to expand Czech heat pump plant
Panasonic has reopened its expanded heat pump factory in Pilsen, Czech Republic, after investing €320 million (US$374.3 million) to increase capacity for the European market.
The facility, now its main European production and R&D hub for air-to-water heat pumps, aims to reach an annual output of 1.4 million units by 2030.
The expansion is part of Panasonic’s strategy to shift production and research from Southeast Asia to Europe, responding to EU decarbonization goals and growing demand for local clean energy products.
The move also addresses supply chain risks, geopolitical tensions in Asia, and scrutiny of emissions from imported goods.
The European heat pump market was valued at €12.2 billion (US$14.3 billion) in 2024 and could exceed €71 billion (US$83 billion) by 2034, according to Global Market Insights.
Panasonic, which has operated in the Czech Republic since 1997, expects the enlarged Pilsen plant to create new skilled jobs in manufacturing and research.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ European heat pump market shows strong fundamentals despite near-term sales challenges
Panasonic’s timing for this major expansion reflects confidence in long-term European demand despite recent market turbulence.
While global heat pump sales declined 1% in 2024, with Europe experiencing a significant 21% drop largely attributed to reduced sales in Germany and France, the underlying market projections remain robust1.
The European heat pump market is projected to grow from $14.2 billion in 2024 to $82.6 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate of 19.3%2.
This growth trajectory supports Panasonic’s decision to invest €320 million now, positioning the company to capture demand as the market recovers and expands.
Heat pumps currently represent 28% of Europe’s space heating market, indicating substantial room for growth as countries phase out gas boilers3.
The disparity between short-term sales declines and long-term projections suggests that companies making infrastructure investments during this cooling period may gain competitive advantages when demand rebounds.
2️⃣ Supply chain regionalization accelerates amid rising geopolitical concerns
