Panasonic battery unit sees profit rebound after loss
Panasonic Holdings expects a strong profit recovery at its battery business in the year ending March 2027.
The unit, which supplies batteries to Tesla, is forecast to more than double operating income.
That compares with 69.8 billion yen (US$444 million) in the year ended March 2026.
The unit posted a 3.8 billion yen (US$24.2 million) operating loss in the January-to-March quarter as US tariffs, start-up costs at its Kansas plant, and lower sales at a factory in Japan weighed on results.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
U.S. subsidies help explain Panasonic’s profit forecast
- Panasonic’s Kansas plant rests on U.S. incentives meant to build a domestic battery supply chain 1.
- The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) can reshape the economics of U.S. battery production. Panasonic said tax credits lifted its earnings margin to 18% from 7% in the fiscal year ending 2024 2.
- In the fiscal year ending March 2024, Panasonic received a 86.8 billion yen (US$552 million) IRA tax credit for electric-vehicle battery production at its Nevada factory, Gigafactory 1. That helped lift group net income to a record 3.
- That support also helps explain Panasonic’s confidence in future profits after the battery business posted an operating loss in January to March, tied to U.S. tariffs and start-up costs at Kansas.
Panasonic’s forecast rests on U.S. politics and Tesla
- Panasonic’s U.S. battery profits still depend on IRA subsidies, which leaves the business exposed to shifts in U.S. politics, including the presidential election 3.
- If policy changes cut that support, U.S.-made batteries could lose the cost edge that lets them compete with Chinese products 2.
- Panasonic Energy has weighed adding 4680 battery cell capacity at Kansas for Tesla vehicles, though no final decision had been made 4.
- That would deepen its exposure to Tesla as electric-vehicle demand cools. Panasonic has tried to widen its customer base with Mazda and Subaru 3.
