Palo Alto Networks founder steps down after 20 years

Nir Zuk, founder of Palo Alto Networks, has retired from his roles as chief technology officer and board member after nearly 20 years at the company.

The leadership change comes as Palo Alto Networks prepares to acquire Israeli cybersecurity company CyberArk in a US$25 billion deal.

Lee Klarich, previously chief product officer, will take over as chief technology officer and join the board.

Zuk founded Palo Alto Networks in 2005 after working at Check Point and is credited with developing the “next-generation firewall” model.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cybersecurity industry shifts from innovation to consolidation as threats evolve

Zuk’s departure coincides with a transformation in cybersecurity strategy, moving from pioneering individual security tools to building comprehensive platforms through major acquisitions.

The $25 billion CyberArk deal represents this shift, as 88% of breaches now originate from credential theft, making identity security critical alongside traditional firewall protection 1.

This evolution reflects how cybersecurity has matured since Zuk founded Palo Alto Networks in 2005 with his “next-generation firewall” concept.

Where companies once built specialized tools to address specific threats, the industry now consolidates multiple security functions into unified platforms to reduce complexity and improve response times 2.

Before such mergers, organizations typically relied on several different security systems, creating fragmented security postures and increased costs 2.

The timing suggests that founding-era innovators like Zuk, who pioneered breakthrough technologies, are stepping aside as the industry prioritizes integration and scale over individual product innovation.

2️⃣ Platform strategy becomes essential for cybersecurity market leadership

Palo Alto Networks’ platformization approach, exemplified by the CyberArk acquisition, demonstrates how cybersecurity companies must now offer comprehensive solutions rather than point products to maintain market position.

The company’s annual recurring revenue grew 40% to $4.5 billion, with significant contributions from customers adopting multiple platform components rather than individual tools 3.
