Palo Alto to acquire cybersecurity firm CyberArk for $25b

Palo Alto Networks has agreed to acquire Israeli cybersecurity firm CyberArk for US$25 billion, marking one of the largest deals in the sector’s history.

The acquisition, announced on July 30, 2025, will see Palo Alto Networks expand into the identity security category, an area seen as increasingly important with the rise of AI.

Both companies maintain large development teams in Israel, and recently began a technical partnership to explore how their platforms could integrate.

Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks, said he plans to retain all of CyberArk’s employees following the acquisition.

The deal highlights ongoing consolidation within the cybersecurity industry, as companies look to address new threats related to digital and machine identities.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cybersecurity consolidation accelerates as firms build comprehensive platforms

Palo Alto’s CyberArk acquisition fits a broader industry pattern of cybersecurity companies acquiring other security firms to build complete platforms.

Over half (53%) of VC-backed cybersecurity companies acquired in recent years were purchased by other cybersecurity firms, demonstrating the industry’s drive toward consolidation rather than diversification 1.

This strategic approach mirrors Cisco’s $2.35 billion acquisition of identity security firm Duo Security in 2018, where Cisco specifically targeted identity management capabilities to complement its existing security portfolio 2.

The trend shows how cybersecurity leaders recognize that customers prefer integrated platforms over managing multiple point solutions from different vendors.

By acquiring CyberArk, Arora addresses what he described as “the last major gap” in Palo Alto’s platform, continuing this industry-wide trend of building comprehensive security ecosystems through strategic acquisitions.

2️⃣ Identity management market timing validates massive premium

The $25 billion price tag reflects the explosive growth trajectory of the identity and access management sector.

The global IAM market is projected to grow from $17.25 billion in 2025 to $73.28 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate of 12.2% 3.
