Palantir shares drop 10% despite strong Q1 earnings

Shares of Palantir Technologies fell more than 10% on May 6, after its latest earnings report.

The company posted adjusted earnings of 13 cents per share on US$884 million in revenue, beating analyst expectations.

Revenue rose 39% year-over-year, and net income jumped to US$214 million from US$105.5 million. Palantir also raised its full-year revenue outlook to between US$3.89 billion and US$3.90 billion.

Despite the strong results, investors were concerned about other key metrics. International commercial revenue dropped 5% year-over-year, partly due to challenges in Europe.

Margins declined sequentially, and analysts questioned whether the updated guidance justifies Palantir’s high valuation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ High-growth tech stocks face valuation scrutiny even when exceeding expectations

Palantir’s situation reflects a common challenge for high-growth technology stocks: maintaining investor confidence despite rich valuations.

Despite reporting impressive 39% year-over-year revenue growth and raising its annual guidance to $3.9 billion, Palantir’s stock still fell over 10% as investors questioned its valuation metrics1.

The company trades at approximately 200 times estimated earnings, making it one of the most expensive stocks in the Nasdaq 100 index and creating a high bar for quarterly performance2.

Analysts labeled Palantir’s 56x multiple on projected 2026 revenue as “irrational,” highlighting how even strong execution (39% revenue growth, 44% adjusted operating margin) may not satisfy investors when expectations are elevated1.

This pattern emerges regularly with momentum-driven tech stocks, where short-term price corrections often follow strong fundamental performance due to valuation concerns rather than business execution issues.

2️⃣ Geographic imbalance reveals uneven global AI adoption patterns

Palantir’s quarterly results expose a significant geographic divergence in AI adoption that extends beyond just one company’s performance.

While U.S. commercial revenue surged 71% year-over-year to $255 million, international commercial revenue declined by 10-11% sequentially, creating a stark contrast in regional performance3.
