Palantir defies tech slump with soaring share gains

Palantir Technologies has become one of the top-performing stocks in the S&P 500 this year, with shares rising over 70%.

This success occurs amid a broader slowdown in the tech sector, which is facing concerns over US tariffs and economic uncertainty.

The company gained momentum with rising US defense spending, including a US$30 million Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract in April 2025.

This contract represents its largest individual award from the agency.

Founded in 2003 with CIA backing, Palantir now earns over 42% of its revenue from US government deals, while international commercial sales have declined.

Its political ties, especially co-founder Peter Thiel’s support for President Donald Trump, have raised concerns, though Palantir insists its work is nonpartisan.

Analysts warn that reliance on US contracts and a polarizing image could limit long-term growth.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Unprecedented valuation premium reveals investor optimism and risks

Palantir’s forward price-to-earnings ratio of 200.47 (compared to Nvidia’s 27.96) represents one of the most extreme valuation premiums in the tech sector 1.

The company’s market capitalization has soared to approximately $281 billion despite generating only $3.12 billion in trailing twelve-month revenue—a remarkable 90x revenue multiple that far exceeds industry norms 2, 3.

This valuation surge has occurred despite mixed analyst sentiment, with many Wall Street professionals setting price targets suggesting potential downside of 20% or more from current levels 1.

The disparity between Palantir’s stock performance and its financial fundamentals reflects historical periods of investor enthusiasm for emerging technologies, where early movers commanded significant premiums before market corrections 4.

Even supportive analysts acknowledge the valuation risks, with Stephen Guilfoyle noting substantial volatility in the stock despite raising his price target to $153 5.
