Oyo seeks new name ahead of IPO, premium app launch

Oyo plans to rename its parent company, Oravel Stays, as it prepares for an IPO and aims to expand its premium offerings.

Founder Ritesh Agarwal is asking the public for bold, global, and versatile name suggestions that align with the company’s aspirations beyond hospitality.

He is offering a prize of 3 lakh rupee (US$3,507) and a chance to meet him for the winning idea.

The company is developing a new app focused on premium and mid-market hotels, a sector that has grown significantly in India and globally. The chosen name may also be used for this app.

Oyo will present its IPO plans to key shareholder SoftBank at a London meeting in June. The firm aims for a public listing in the last quarter of the current fiscal year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ OYO’s premium push follows clear market signals of luxury segment outperformance

OYO’s move toward premium offerings aligns with broader industry trends showing luxury segments significantly outperforming budget categories across global markets.

The U.S. luxury hotel segment recently recorded a 6.8% year-over-year increase in revenue per available room (RevPAR), noticeably outpacing economy segments 1.

This premium segment focus makes financial sense when looking at India’s luxury hotel market projections, which show growth from $2.99 billion in 2025 to $4.83 billion by 2030, representing a substantial 10.06% CAGR 2.

OYO’s evolution from its budget-focused origins to a more diversified portfolio mirrors successful strategies employed by established hotel groups like IHCL, which has achieved record growth through upscale and midscale expansions 3.

The company’s exploration of a separate premium app represents a logical response to what industry data shows is a bifurcating market where higher-end offerings are capturing disproportionate growth and profitability.

2️⃣ Rebranding signals business model transformation beyond hospitality

OYO’s parent company rebranding effort, seeking a name “broad enough to grow beyond hospitality,” reflects a strategic evolution similar to how the company previously transformed from a full-stack hospitality model to a franchise-based approach to accelerate growth 4.

This mirrors the broader Indian hospitality industry’s transition from asset-heavy to asset-light business models, which industry analysts identify as a key transformation allowing for faster scalability and reduced risk 5.
