Oyo buys Australian proptech firm MadeComfy in $50m deal

Oyo has acquired MadeComfy for over US$50 million, marking one of the largest short-stay rental tech exits in Australia.

MadeComfy, founded in 2015, provides property management services for short-term rentals across platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Stayz.

The company manages over 1,300 properties and partners with around 100 real estate agencies.

Following the acquisition, MadeComfy will continue to operate under its own brand, with its co-founders remaining as co-CEOs.

The deal gives Oyo a direct entry into the Australian and New Zealand short-stay markets.

It is Oyo’s second major acquisition in less than a year, following its purchase of Motel 6 in the US.

The financial terms include a mix of cash and equity in Oyo’s parent company, Oravel Stays.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ OYO’s acquisition strategy targets local expertise over building from scratch

The MadeComfy deal follows OYO’s pattern of acquiring established local players rather than expanding organically into new markets.

In 2019, OYO acquired @Leisure Group for $415 million to enter Europe, gaining 115,000 homes and 300,000 rooms globally in a single transaction 1. They followed this with a $335 million investment to strengthen their European vacation rental operations and acquired Danish pricing specialist Danamica to enhance their technology capabilities 23.

This acquisition-heavy approach allows OYO to quickly gain local market knowledge, established property networks, and regulatory compliance that would take years to develop independently.

The strategy has proven effective at scale, as OYO grew from startup to managing over 1 million rooms globally in just six years through this model 4.

2️⃣ Technology platforms create outsized value when combined with fragmented local markets

OYO’s ability to pay $50 million for MadeComfy’s 1,300 properties demonstrates how global technology infrastructure can amplify the value of local property management networks.
