Oracle to invest $40b in Nvidia chips for OpenAI data center

Oracle plans to invest about US$40 billion in Nvidia’s high-performance chips to support OpenAI’s new data center in the United States.

The cloud service provider intends to acquire around 400,000 of Nvidia’s GB200 chips, which are among the company’s most powerful products.

Oracle will lease this computing power to OpenAI.

This data center is part of the Stargate project, an initiative by leading US AI firms aimed at enhancing the country’s position in the global artificial intelligence sector.

Oracle, Nvidia, and OpenAI have not responded to requests for comment regarding this investment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Stargate’s unprecedented scale represents a new era in AI infrastructure investment

The $40 billion Oracle-Nvidia chip purchase represents approximately 40% of the initial $100 billion investment allocated for the Stargate project’s first phase of data centers in Texas 1.

This massive transaction reflects the extraordinary capital requirements of modern AI infrastructure, with the overall Stargate initiative projected to reach $500 billion in total investment over four years 2.

Each data center in the Stargate project requires approximately 50 megawatts of power, equivalent to the electricity needs of about 40,000 homes, highlighting the enormous resource demands of advanced AI systems 2.

The project’s scope extends beyond computing, with each data center expected to consume around 10,000 tons of steel, potentially driving over 500,000 tons of total steel consumption and creating ripple effects across manufacturing sectors 3.

These investment levels signal that AI infrastructure has become a strategic national priority, similar to historical infrastructure projects like the interstate highway system.

2️⃣ Oracle positions itself as a critical AI infrastructure provider amid fierce competition

This massive chip purchase represents Oracle’s strategic move to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI cloud services market, leveraging its existing cloud infrastructure capabilities to support next-generation AI workloads 4.

Oracle has systematically built its AI capabilities through both internal development and strategic partnerships, embedding AI functionality across its cloud applications while simultaneously developing specialized AI infrastructure offerings 45.
