Oracle plans thousands of job cuts as AI costs rise

Oracle plans to cut thousands of jobs across divisions to address a cash shortfall from a major AI data-center build-out, people familiar with the matter said.

The reductions could start this month and will target roles the company expects to need less of because of AI, two people said.

Oracle is embarking on a historic build-out of data centers to run AI workloads for customers including OpenAI and said last month it plans to raise up to $50 billion this year through debt and equity.

Wall Street estimates Oracle’s cash flow will turn negative before improving around 2030, and the company had about 162,000 employees globally as of the end of May 2026.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Oracle’s AI bet brings steep costs and new financial strain

  • Analysts estimate Oracle may cut 20,000 to 30,000 roles, targeting $8 billion to $10 billion in cash flow 1.
  • Oracle faces hurdles funding its AI data-center expansion. Some US banks have cut lending and doubled interest rate premiums since September 1.
  • Demand keeps climbing. Oracle’s Remaining Performance Obligations (a measure of contracted revenue not yet recognized) reached $523 billion in Q2 FY2026 after new AI-related commitments 2.

AI spending is reshaping Oracle’s funding and data-center plans

  • To ease the cash squeeze, Oracle asks some new customers for 40% upfront payments. It is also weighing “bring your own chip” setups where customers supply their own AI chips for Oracle to run in its data centers 1.
  • Inside the company, Oracle is moving to a “chip neutrality” policy, which means infrastructure that works with several chip suppliers. It also booked a gain from selling its interest in the Ampere chip company 2.
  • The strain is spreading across tech. Even large incumbents are reworking operations and financing to cover AI’s heavy capital needs 3.
