Oracle cuts 10,000 India jobs in global restructuring

Oracle, a US cloud and database software company, has cut about 10,000 jobs in India, sources familiar with the matter said, as part of a global restructuring that has already affected about 30,000 roles.

The sources said the cuts include around 1,000 roles at Oracle Financial Software Services, a listed unit in India, and span junior engineers to senior managers.

Oracle had about 50,000 staff in India and 162,000 globally as of May 2025, and a US WARN notice says it will lay off 491 employees in Washington state, effective June 1, while keeping its Seattle sites open.

TD Cowen said in January that Oracle faces heavy funding needs for data center expansion, and Layoffs.fyi estimates tech firms have cut about 40,500 jobs so far this year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The layoffs follow investor pressure and rising AI buildout costs

  • Oracle has begun telling staff it will cut thousands of roles as it boosts AI spending, while investors watch its large AI infrastructure commitments 1.
  • Spending on data center capacity has climbed to support AI workloads. Executives also cited $553 billion in remaining performance obligations (RPO), a measure of contracted revenue yet to be recognized 1.
  • In January, Oracle said it planned to raise $50 billion in debt and equity to fund the buildout. Executives later said there were no more plans to raise debt in 2026 1.
  • Oracle expects fiscal 2026 restructuring costs of up to $2.1 billion, mostly for severance and related expenses. Fox Business reported shares rose over 4% during Tuesday’s session after the layoff news 2.

Oracle’s AI push adds to the cash demands of the cloud and AI race

  • Smaller cloud providers often need large upfront spending and reliable financing to compete on AI infrastructure 1.
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle’s cloud computing platform, is widely seen as a smaller player than cloud rivals such as Amazon. Oracle is investing to expand its AI infrastructure footprint 1.
  • An IoT Analytics review of new GenAI customer case studies across AWS, Microsoft, and Google found Microsoft had 62% of the sample, with Google second and AWS third 3.
  • The AI infrastructure race also hinges on money and the ability to land large contracts, which often favors incumbents with deep balance sheets and existing enterprise relationships 1.
