Oppo sees AI driving demand despite bubble concerns

Oppo expects AI features to drive demand for smartphones in China and sees growth potential in Europe, according to a company executive.

Elvis Zhou, Oppo’s chief executive for Europe, said the company’s research shows that users under 35 are especially interested in AI-powered features like translation and photo editing.

Zhou said he does not view the current AI investment surge as a bubble risk for the smartphone industry.

Recent large-scale investments in AI have led some investors to worry about a potential market bubble similar to the dotcom era.

Oppo ranked fifth in smartphone shipments to Western Europe in Q2 2025, according to company data.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AI gains in Chinese phones remain unproven in shipments

  • Oppo says AI features will lift demand, yet China’s smartphone shipments fell 2% in Q3 2025’s first 8 weeks and 2.4% in Q2 2025 12.
  • Huawei led Q2 2025 with 17.6% year-over-year growth and Counterpoint Research (a mobile industry analytics firm) linked it to new mid to high end models rather than AI 3.
  • National subsidies did not lift demand in Q2 2025 as brands focused on inventory destocking (reducing existing stock), which signals hesitation that goes beyond feature sets 3.
  • Global shipments rose 1% in Q2 2025 while AI spread across models, yet low end Android devices faced weak demand from tariffs and inflation 4.

Premium push in Europe opens room for trade-in and refurbishment services

  • Oppo leans on high end features in Europe, yet only 31% of buyers trade in old phones, which leaves supply for secondary markets (resale and refurbished-device markets) 5.
  • The UK smartphone market’s -0.8% growth forecast and a shift to longer ownership create demand for trade-in programs (credit for old devices) that offset premium pricing 6.
  • European secondary markets fell 11% in France and 3% in the UK in Q1 2025, yet CCS Insight (a technology research firm) says up to 100 million phones a year could be resold if owners join trade-ins 75.
  • Third-party operators (independent refurbishers plus logistics providers) can build forward trade-in schemes (locking in a future buyback price at purchase) as carriers and retailers expand programs due to European Union (EU) limits on imports 5.
