OpenAI's Sora hits 470,000 Android downloads on first day

OpenAI’s AI video app Sora reported an estimated 470,000 downloads on its first day on the Google Play Store, according to Appfigures.

The Android launch included the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with no invite needed in top markets.

By comparison, the iOS version was limited to the US and Canada and initially required an invite, resulting in an estimated 110,000 first-day downloads based on revised Appfigures data.

On Android, about 296,000 of the total downloads came from the US.

Sora lets users create AI-generated videos and features a TikTok-style feed and an option called Cameos, where users and friends are animated by AI.

The app remains in the top five of the US App Store’s free charts.

Sora competes with Meta’s AI app, which has expanded to Europe after launching in the US.
