OpenAI’s Fidji Simo to step back after medical leave

OpenAI executive Fidji Simo said on July 9 that she will leave her full-time role as CEO of AGI deployment and move to a part-time advisory position after taking medical leave for a neuroimmune condition.

Simo, the former Instacart CEO who joined OpenAI’s board in March 2024, started her operating role in August 2025 after announcing in May 2025 that she would leave Instacart.

The role was initially introduced as CEO of applications and later renamed CEO of AGI deployment, and she kept responsibility for OpenAI’s product and business teams.

During Simo’s medical leave, OpenAI president Greg Brockman handled the product teams.

The change was part of a broader reorganization that also included COO Brad Lightcap moving to special projects and CMO Kate Rouch taking health leave.
