OpenAI’s Altman to visit India next month ahead of office launch

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will visit India in September as the company prepares to open its first office in the country later this year.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has set up a legal entity in India and started hiring for local roles, including three sales positions, according to job postings on its website.

The company currently employs one person in India, Pragya Misra, who manages public policy and partnerships.

Former Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly joined OpenAI in 2023 as a senior adviser for government engagement.

India is among the top five developer markets for OpenAI and has the largest number of student users on the platform.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Localized pricing drives accessibility in emerging markets

OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 per month ($4.60) in India demonstrates how AI companies are adapting their pricing strategies for different economic contexts1.

This represents a significant discount compared to ChatGPT Plus’s standard $20 monthly fee in developed markets, showing how tech companies balance accessibility with revenue generation.

The pricing strategy appears to be working, as ChatGPT’s weekly active users in India quadrupled over the past year, suggesting that affordable access points can rapidly expand user bases in price-sensitive markets1.

This approach mirrors successful strategies used by other tech giants like Netflix and Spotify, which have introduced lower-priced tiers in emerging markets to capture larger user volumes.

The user growth indicates that reducing price barriers can unlock demand in markets where purchasing power differs significantly from Western consumers.

2️⃣ Student and developer adoption signals India’s AI talent pipeline

India’s position as both OpenAI’s largest student user base and among the top five developer markets globally reveals the country’s emerging role as an AI talent hub1.
