OpenAI triples annualized revenue to $20b in 2025

OpenAI’s CFO Sarah Friar announced that the company’s annualized revenue exceeded US$20 billion in 2025, up from US$6 billion in 2024, driven by increased computing capacity.

The company’s computing power grew to 1.9 gigawatts in 2025 from 0.6 gigawatts the previous year. OpenAI reported reaching record levels of weekly and daily active users.

Friar outlined that OpenAI’s platform now includes text, images, voice, code, and APIs, with future efforts focusing on agents and workflow automation.

She added that the company plans to prioritize practical adoption in health, science, and enterprise sectors in 2026 and aims to maintain a flexible partnership-based approach to its infrastructure.

Last week, OpenAI said it would introduce ads in ChatGPT for some US users to help offset development costs.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI’s $20 billion annualized revenue milestone calls for a look at costs

  • A $20 billion annualized revenue figure has been announced, yet its staying power has to be weighed against large expenses and financial obligations.
  • In the first half of 2025, $2.5 billion in cost of revenue was recorded on $4.3 billion in revenue. That works out to a 42% gross margin before other expenses 1.
  • A 20% revenue share is reported to be paid to Microsoft, which makes product unit economics harder to pin down since neither OpenAI nor Microsoft has publicly confirmed the percentage 2.
  • An $8 billion operating loss is projected for 2025, so profitability has not been reached even with fast revenue growth 3.

The new ad platform offers a distinct opportunity for advertisers

  • Ads in ChatGPT give advertisers and agencies another performance channel, and internal documents forecast $1 billion in revenue from “free user monetization” in 2026 4.
  • To keep trust intact, ads will sit in separate, clearly labeled boxes below answers. They will not influence the chatbot’s primary responses 5.
  • The platform will use “semantic intent matching,” which targets ads based on the topic and context across a user’s full conversation rather than keywords 6.
  • User data will not be sold to advertisers. Some personalization may be used, though users can opt out, which may appeal to a large, privacy-conscious user base 5.
