OpenAI to expand in India with affordable AI tools: CEO
OpenAI plans to expand its product offerings in India and lower the cost of its AI tools, CEO Sam Altman said.
He described India as OpenAI’s second-largest and fastest-growing market after the US.
The company will work with local partners to increase AI access and affordability.
OpenAI recently launched GPT-5, its latest AI model, which the company claims has improved reasoning and multilingual abilities, especially for Indian languages.
Altman said there is no evidence that software engineers are losing jobs due to AI, despite layoffs at several IT firms that have increased their use of AI-generated code.
He predicted AI will boost productivity and lower software development costs.
Altman also said OpenAI will comply with local AI regulations as different countries adopt their own approaches. He plans to visit India again in September.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Higher-skilled workers face greater AI exposure despite job growth optimism
While Sam Altman dismisses concerns about software engineer job losses, research reveals a more complex picture about AI’s impact on employment.
A Brookings Institution analysis found that better-educated workers face the most exposure to AI technologies, with workers holding graduate or professional degrees being almost four times more exposed to AI than those with only high school education1.
This creates an interesting paradox: the very professionals who are building and implementing AI systems are also those most likely to see their work transformed by these technologies.
The pattern suggests that rather than replacing jobs entirely, AI may be reshaping how high-skilled work gets done, potentially validating Altman’s claim about unlimited software demand while acknowledging that the nature of software development work will likely change significantly.
2️⃣ India’s AI skills growth positions it as both major market and development hub
OpenAI’s focus on India as a priority market aligns with broader trends showing the country’s growing importance in the global AI ecosystem.
