OpenAI to challenge Microsoft’s GitHub with new platform
OpenAI is reportedly developing a code-hosting platform to rival GitHub. OpenAI engineers experienced recent GitHub outages, which prompted the effort.
The Information said employees have discussed offering the repository for purchase by OpenAI customers. If sold, the product would place OpenAI in direct commercial competition with Microsoft, which holds a significant stake in the company.
Reuters earlier reported that a recent funding round valued OpenAI at about US$840 billion after a roughly US$110 billion raise.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
GitHub widens model options while Microsoft pulls it closer
- GitHub keeps adding outside AI choices, even as Microsoft weaves it deeper into the Microsoft stack.
- Agent HQ lets developers run rival AI agents, meaning AI-powered coding assistants, such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex inside GitHub workflows 1.
- GitHub is also adding models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and others across GitHub Copilot and GitHub Models 2.
- Microsoft moved GitHub into its CoreAI platform and tools group, pushing an AI-first development platform instead of a locked-in setup 3.
The fight centers on the full AI-native workflow, beyond code hosting
- An OpenAI code-hosting service would aim to control more of the developer environment, rather than only shipping AI models as a feature 4.
- A platform built for AI from day one could pull in users the way Cursor has, which nearly 18% of developers use in a recent survey 3.
- Taking on GitHub also means matching its established security, compliance, and automation tooling.
- Without advanced security scanning and strong Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), OpenAI could have trouble attracting enterprise customers that fund GitHub’s premium tiers.
