OpenAI informed an Indian court that deleting training data for its ChatGPT model would conflict with its legal responsibilities in the US.

This statement was part of an 86-page filing submitted to the Delhi High Court on Jan. 10.

The dispute started with a lawsuit from the Indian news agency ANI, which claims OpenAI used its content without permission to train ChatGPT.

ANI is seeking both a ban on future use and the deletion of previously used data.

OpenAI argued that US legal requirements mandate the company to preserve, not delete, the training data during ongoing litigation.

It also stated that Indian courts lack jurisdiction, as the company does not operate in India and store ChatGPT’s data on servers outside the country.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Jan. 28.
