OpenAI taps ex-US Army secretary for national security AI

OpenAI said on November 2 that former US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will join the company as senior counselor for national security modernization.

In the new role, he will advise OpenAI leaders and external partners on the responsible use of AI in national security and cybersecurity, with a focus on US allies.

Driscoll previously served as the 26th Secretary of the Army, overseeing operations, modernization, and resources.

OpenAI said he will also help its internal teams understand the operational needs of national security institutions.

OpenAI said the appointment builds on its Daybreak cybersecurity initiative. Proofpoint, a US cybersecurity company, said it joined Daybreak’s partner program to advance responsible AI for cybersecurity.

The appointment also follows OpenAI’s partnership with Anduril, a US defense technology company, to use AI in national security missions.
