OpenAI, South Korea form AI safety partnership

South Korea became the fourth country to form an AI security partnership with OpenAI on June 17 under a memorandum of understanding between OpenAI and the country’s AI Safety Institute, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The agreement says both sides will share technical information and help prepare a global framework for evaluating AI safety that reflects the Korean language and South Korea’s social context.

The institute was launched on November 27, 2024, as a government-backed AI safety research hub focused on risks such as misuse, technical limitations, and loss of control over AI systems.

OpenAI previously signed similar agreements with AI safety institutes in the US, the UK, and Japan.

The AI Safety Institute and OpenAI plan to hold a working-level meeting to finalise the details of the cooperation.
