OpenAI, Samsung deepen next-gen chip, AI ties
OpenAI said in Seoul on September 9 that it is deepening cooperation with Samsung Electronics on next-generation chips and enterprise AI services.
The moves comes as OpenAI develops its own chips and expands ties with South Korean suppliers.
Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, said OpenAI and Samsung had made progress on joint research and production of next-generation chips.
Samsung said it could not confirm customer information.
The move builds on earlier cooperation, including a 2025 strategic partnership on AI infrastructure and Samsung’s deployment of ChatGPT and Codex in products and internal workflows.
South Korea is central to OpenAI’s chip supply chain because of its memory chip makers.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, a South Korea-based memory chip company, previously signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data center project.
OpenAI’s chip push adds context. In June, it unveiled its first custom AI inference chip, Jalapeno, designed with Broadcom and set to be manufactured by TSMC.
