OpenAI said to acquire healthtech startup Torch for $60m
OpenAI has acquired Torch, a healthcare technology startup, for about US$60 million, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Torch was developing an AI-powered system to consolidate patient health data from multiple sources into a single platform, and its team will join OpenAI as part of the deal.
The transaction details were not publicly disclosed.
The acquisition follows OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT Health, which allows users to connect medical records and wellness apps to its chatbot.
OpenAI has also rolled out new enterprise healthcare products, with early partners including HCA Healthcare, as it continues to expand through hires and acquisitions.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
- OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Healthcare with a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for HIPAA use 1. Patient information stays under organizational control with data residency (choosing where data is stored) and audit logs (records of access) 1. Customer-managed encryption keys are supported (organization-controlled encryption), and content is not used to train models 1.
- Torch, a healthcare startup that consolidates patient health data, gives OpenAI a way to unify records across systems for clinical workflows.
- Early adopters include HCA Healthcare, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Cedars-Sinai 1. Standard consumer ChatGPT is not suited for Protected Health Information (PHI), while HIPAA use is supported under a BAA 2.
- Apollo Hospitals put 3.5% of its digital budget into tools that free 2 to 3 hours per clinician, and Duke University cut note time by 20% with AI transcription 3.
- Mayo Clinic works with Google Cloud and NVIDIA for deployment at scale. Mass General Brigham serves 3,000+ physicians with ambient documentation (voice-driven note-taking that runs in background). Cleveland Clinic embeds AI across Epic workflows 4.
- They need FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) connectors, PHI redaction tools, and secure LLM (large language model) gateways (policy-controlled proxy layers for secure routing plus logging) to connect with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems while OpenAI’s interoperability remains unclear 1.
