OpenAI rolls out new safeguards for ChatGPT users under 18
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced new user policies for ChatGPT on September 16, 2025, introducing stricter safeguards for users under 18.
The company said ChatGPT will stop engaging in flirtatious conversations with minors and add more protections around discussions of self-harm and suicide.
If a minor uses the chatbot to discuss suicidal scenarios, ChatGPT may attempt to notify parents or, in severe cases, local authorities.
Parents will now have the option to set blackout hours, restricting their children’s access to the chatbot.
