OpenAI reportedly in talks with Tata for major India AI push
OpenAI is in advanced talks with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to develop AI compute infrastructure and co-create enterprise AI solutions in India, according to sources.
OpenAI, based in San Francisco and valued at US$1 trillion, is negotiating to lease at least 500 MW of data center capacity from HyperVault, TCS’ data center unit, for local AI model training and operations.
If the partnership goes through, OpenAI would be the first major tenant for HyperVault’s planned gigawatt-scale data centers, which also aim to serve hyperscalers, corporate clients, and government entities.
OpenAI has enabled local data residency in several Asian markets, including India, amid increasing data localization requirements.

Reported 500 MW lease needs proof of power and permits
- TCS announced HyperVault will build over 1 gigawatt of AI data center capacity in the next few years 1. No source lists permitted sites (locations with environmental and construction approvals).
