Amazon’s Trainium chips face adoption hurdles despite cost advantages

• AWS (Amazon Web Services) says Trainium offers 30-40% better price-performance than GPUs 1. Cohere found Trainium 1 and 2 underperform Nvidia’s H100, and Stability AI saw Trainium 2 lag on latency 1. Amazon built 220,000 Trainium 2 units before ending the run 2. Anthropic expanded work with Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and acknowledged the hassle of mixed chip designs and outages 1.
• Teams mostly use Trainium 2 for inference (running models to serve user requests) 2, while training hits limits from low memory bandwidth (the rate at which data moves to and from chip memory) 2. Amazon employees cited blockers that kept customers from switching 1. OpenAI’s $38 billion AWS deal uses only Nvidia GPUs, with no Trainium in the mix 1.

Toolmakers could benefit from OpenAI diversification

• Independent software vendors (third-party toolmakers) could gain if OpenAI diversifies its setup. They can ship migration tools for the AWS Neuron software development kit (SDK), used to program Trainium. Teams now replace deprecated environment variables 3 and sometimes rewrite kernels or PyTorch ops with Accelerated Linear Algebra (XLA) 4.
• Cloud teams with large training jobs should test a mix of accelerators now. Trainium 3 will reach about 150,000 units through 2026 2, with Trainium 4 slated for 2027 2. Investors can back startups building accelerator-agnostic training frameworks across AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and Nvidia GPUs.
