OpenAI reportedly hires ex-Apple models head from Meta
OpenAI has hired Ruoming Pang, who oversaw AI infrastructure for Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, The Information reported, citing an OpenAI spokesperson.
Pang joined Meta from Apple about seven months ago and left last week after being aggressively recruited by OpenAI for several months, the report said.
He joined Meta last year on a pay package reportedly worth over US$200 million over several years.
Meta and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Meta uses oversized pay packages to keep talent, quick exits can get expensive
- Meta’s compensation offers, like the one Pang received when he left Apple, go beyond straightforward cash.
- Most of the value comes as company stock that vests over several years, often longer than the usual four-year schedule 1.
- Payouts also depend on performance, with stock awards tied to measures such as share price growth 1.
- By leaving Meta after about seven months, Pang may have given up a large share of his reported more than US$200 million package, which speaks to how hard OpenAI is pushing to hire top people.
Pang’s exit adds friction to Meta’s plan to spend its way to the top
- Pang’s fast departure hurts Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, the Meta unit he worked in, which already faces outside doubts about leadership and direction 2.
- The move strengthens the idea that a clear purpose can matter more than pay for elite hires.
- Some new hires reportedly feel less energized by Meta’s product aims than by OpenAI’s mission to build artificial general intelligence that benefits humanity 2.
- The recruiting fight keeps heating up, since Meta hired Pang from Apple about seven months ago.
- OpenAI then pulled him from Meta, which suggests even nine-figure deals may not keep star staff in place.
