OpenAI has released a preview Linux desktop app for ChatGPT worldwide, extending its desktop app to Linux after requests from users.

The release also adds support for ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent.

The app supports desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.

OpenAI’s documentation says its desktop app is also available on Windows and macOS and serves as a workspace for running projects in parallel, working with files, using a computer, and keeping long-running work moving.

Users can choose between ChatGPT and Codex in the app and switch between Chat and Work within ChatGPT, making the Linux release relevant for both general use and coding workflows.

The launch follows Anthropic’s Linux beta for Claude about a month earlier. Anthropic says its app supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
