OpenAI plans to buy rival Google’s AI chips: report

OpenAI plans to buy Google’s AI chips, according to an October 27 report citing a person familiar with the matter. The move could deepen ties between the two companies, which compete in AI products and search.

The report did not disclose financial terms.

A June 2025 report said OpenAI had started renting Google chips. Google’s Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, have emerged as an alternative to Nvidia graphics processing units, or GPUs, for training AI models and running inference.

Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers in 2026, after announcing it would sell them to select customers for use in their own data centers, extending availability beyond Google Cloud.

Alphabet is due to report results on October 28, with investors watching whether the company’s heavy AI spending continues to drive growth in its cloud business.
