OpenAI and Sur Energy have agreed to explore a data center project in Argentina with an investment of up to US$25 billion, the Argentine government said.

The proposed facility would have a capacity of up to 500 megawatts to support advanced AI computing and is structured under Argentina’s RIGI tax incentive program.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the initiative, called Stargate Argentina, marking the company’s first major infrastructure project in Latin America.

If completed, it would rank among the largest technology and energy infrastructure projects in the country.

OpenAI recently closed a secondary share sale, reaching a US$500 billion valuation, and reported more than 800 million weekly ChatGPT users.
