OpenAI, Pine Labs partner to bring AI to payments

OpenAI has partnered with Pine Labs, a fintech firm based in Noida, India, to integrate AI tools into the company’s payments infrastructure.

The collaboration aims to automate workflows such as settlement, reconciliation, and invoicing, with Pine Labs embedding OpenAI’s APIs into its systems.

Pine Labs, which processes over 6 billion transactions worth about US$126 billion across 20 countries, plans to extend AI efficiencies from its internal operations to merchants and corporate clients.

The partnership does not involve revenue sharing, and Pine Labs remains open to working with other AI providers.

The company is also enhancing security measures to protect transaction data as it increases AI-driven automation.

This move aligns with India’s broader AI development efforts, including government initiatives and industry summits, to foster AI adoption across sectors like finance and healthcare.

The partnership marks OpenAI’s continued expansion into India’s payments and enterprise markets.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AI fits complex B2B payment workflows

  • The partnership targets automated settlement, reconciliation, and invoicing because business-to-business (B2B) payments differ from consumer transactions.
  • Unlike retail checkout flows, B2B payment platforms manage bulk transfers, custom credit terms, and multi-step approvals, so payments and invoices can drift out of sync 1.
  • Pine Labs is adding OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) to automate these tasks and cut manual work, without requiring a full rebuild of existing systems 1.
  • The agreement includes no revenue sharing; separately, OpenAI charges for API usage on a usage-based basis, often described in terms of tokens, which ties spend to consumption 2.

The deal adds momentum to AI adoption and security in payments

  • Many Indian fintech leadership teams treat AI as a “competitive necessity,” with senior leaders linking it to future relevance and cost structures 3.
  • The integration combines general-purpose AI with added safeguards to protect transaction data.
  • Some commentators describe OpenAI’s strategy as a “rising tide” approach, where embedding its technology in large platforms creates fresh demand for its services, which offers one way to read the Pine Labs partnership 4.
  • This move may push other Indian fintech firms, including Paytm, to speed up AI rollouts to match enterprise client expectations.
