OpenAI pauses $200 Pro subscriptions after Astra demand surge
OpenAI has paused new subscriptions to its US$200-per-month Pro plan after demand for its new Astra model strained the company’s infrastructure.
OpenAI product leader Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux said on X.
Lower-cost Go and Plus subscriptions, as well as the application programming interface (API), remain available. Sottiaux said the move was meant to protect service quality for existing users.
OpenAI warned on September 9 that it might halt new Pro sign-ups if demand kept rising. The company has not said how long the pause will last or how many users are signing up each day.
Astra launched on September 3 and is rolling out across Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts. OpenAI has also signaled plans to expand computing infrastructure through its Stargate effort with Oracle and SoftBank.
