OpenAI has introduced data residency options for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and API users in Japan, India, Singapore, and South Korea.

This allows eligible customers to store their data within these countries, helping organizations comply with local data sovereignty regulations.

API users can enable this feature by creating a new project and selecting their preferred region, while ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers can set up workspaces with locally stored data, including user conversations, prompts, and uploaded files.

This move builds on OpenAI’s existing data privacy and security measures, which include AES-256 encryption for data at rest and TLS 1.2+ for data in transit.

OpenAI also clarified that customer data is not used to train its models unless users explicitly opt in.
