OpenAI, Nvidia to invest billions in UK data centers

OpenAI and Nvidia are expected to announce significant data center investments in the UK during a visit next week that coincides with President Donald Trump’s trip, according to sources.

The companies are reportedly working with London-based data center operator Nscale Global Holdings Ltd., with OpenAI preparing to spend billions of dollars as part of the plan.

Executives from both firms, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, are part of a US business delegation visiting the UK.

Nscale, launched in May 2024, previously outlined a US$2.5 billion investment in UK data centers over three years, including a facility in Loughton, Essex.

That site is designed to host up to 45,000 Nvidia GB200 super chips for AI workloads, though no customers were named.

Nvidia declined to comment, and OpenAI, Nscale, and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

UK government’s AI infrastructure strategy drives strategic foreign investment

  • The OpenAI and Nvidia announcement aligns with the UK government’s ambitious plan to triple AI-capable data center capacity to 6 gigawatts by 20302.
  • This investment comes amid £44 billion in recent private sector AI infrastructure investments and up to £2 billion in committed public funding from the UK government2.
  • The government’s establishment of “AI Growth Zones” with fast-tracked planning approval specifically aims to attract global operators like OpenAI and Nvidia3.
  • For OpenAI, this UK expansion represents part of its broader European strategy to navigate stricter AI regulations while establishing commercial operations outside the US1.

AI infrastructure investment surge reflects unprecedented global competition

  • The UK announcement fits within a historic year for AI infrastructure, with over $1 trillion committed across eight major projects globally in 20254.
  • AI infrastructure spending surged 97% year-over-year in the first half of 2024, reaching $47.4 billion, with projections of a $200 billion market by 20285.
  • OpenAI’s UK investment, while significant at billions of dollars, remains smaller than its 4.5-gigawatt US Stargate project and 5-gigawatt UAE facility, illustrating the massive scale of current AI infrastructure buildouts1.
