OpenAI names ex-Google exec as corporate development VP

OpenAI has appointed Albert Lee, formerly senior director of corporate development at Google, as its new vice president of corporate development.

Lee will begin his role at the Microsoft-backed AI firm on December 16, 2025 and will report to finance chief Sarah Friar.

At Google, Lee led corporate development for Google Cloud and DeepMind, and was responsible for strategy and scouting since joining in 2011.

His experience includes work on more than 60 acquisitions and strategic investments totaling over US$50 billion, based on his LinkedIn profile.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI borrows Google’s integration-first approach

  • Albert Lee closed more than 60 Google acquisitions and strategic investments worth over $50 billion 1. Targets included Looker (a business intelligence and data analytics platform); Apigee (provider of Application Programming Interface (API) management software); Mandiant (a cybersecurity firm); Firebase (a developer backend platform); and Nest (smart-home devices). These deals favored product gaps over pure technology bets.
  • OpenAI recently bought Software Applications Incorporated, maker of Sky, a Mac-native desktop interface with deep Mac integration 2. It also purchased Statsig, an experimentation and feature-management platform used by product teams, for $1.1B 2. This signals a tilt to plug-in buys that slot into existing products.
  • Lee worked across Google Cloud and DeepMind 3. Expect OpenAI to chase enterprise infrastructure targets similar to Looker and Apigee 1 to cover gaps in tooling for developers in enterprises.

AI founders and investors can read Lee’s deal history to predict OpenAI’s next buys

  • Builders of application-layer tools with product-market fit can see interest from OpenAI. Lee backed Firebase and Nest at Google 1. That mirrors OpenAI’s buy of Software Applications Incorporated, maker of the Mac-native interface Sky 2.
  • Enterprise AI firms at growth stage that solve clear workflows look attractive, such as Looker for data analytics or Apigee for API management 1. Sectors where OpenAI lacks native strength stand out.
  • Investors, along with bankers, should stress integration depth with enterprise traction. Lee’s Google deals favored deal fit and market access over pure technology acquisition 1.
