OpenAI names ex-Airbnb exec to lead EMEA push
OpenAI named former Airbnb executive Emmanuel Marill as managing director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as it expands in a market wary of dependence on US AI providers.
Marill previously worked at Facebook and Groupon in France.
The hire comes as OpenAI expands business sales abroad while facing European scrutiny over digital sovereignty and competition from Mistral AI.
OpenAI said business subscriptions in EMEA rose sevenfold year on year without disclosing sales.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
UK data center pause raises follow-through questions
- OpenAI’s paused Stargate UK project sat within a broader 31 billion pounds (US$41.9 billion) UK tech investment package, which officials framed as a sign the country could become an “AI superpower” 1.
- A UK government press release said partner Nscale, a UK cloud computing company, had signed a 1.9 billion pounds (US$2.57 billion) investment contract. It later said no contract was signed and called the pledge an intention rather than a formal agreement 2.
- Work at the proposed supercomputer site linked to Nscale had not begun, and the location was still a scaffolding yard. Land records also did not show Nscale owned the site at that point 2.
- The pause may tie to energy costs and regulation. It also raises questions about whether related plans can be carried out 2.
OpenAI’s Europe plan leans on local ties
- Hiring a French executive in Paris helps OpenAI answer political pressure in Europe over reliance on US technology providers 3.
- That matters as France-based Mistral AI, an AI startup, markets itself as a “European alternative” to US firms and competes with OpenAI in the region 4.
- OpenAI is also hiring for roles such as head of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Product Partnerships. The job is meant to speed adoption across business, software developer, and consumer channels 5.
- Taken together, the hires and partnerships push OpenAI deeper into Europe’s business and tech networks. The aim is to ease sovereignty concerns by building a stronger local presence 5.
