In April 2024, OpenAI said Moderna, a US biotechnology company developing messenger RNA medicines, was rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise to thousands of employees.

The partnership began in early 2023. Moderna first built mChat using OpenAI’s API, then chose ChatGPT Enterprise after internal testing.

OpenAI said Moderna created 750 GPTs within two months of adopting ChatGPT Enterprise. It also described Dose ID as a clinical data analysis pilot still being developed and validated to support human judgment, alongside tools for contract summaries and internal policy questions.

McKinsey said generative AI use in the pharmaceutical industry was moving from hype to reality.

The US Food and Drug Administration is considering AI in drug development and separately exploring regulation of generative AI-enabled medical devices. Those discussions do not set requirements for Moderna’s clinical data workflows.

OpenAI said in November 2025 that 1 million businesses used its AI tools overall, not ChatGPT Enterprise specifically.
