OpenAI may let users log into apps with ChatGPT

OpenAI is considering a “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature that would allow users to log into third-party applications using their ChatGPT accounts.

This move could help OpenAI compete with major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which offer similar login options.

The company is currently gathering feedback from developers interested in integrating this service but has not disclosed a timeline or the number of interested developers.

Earlier this month, OpenAI launched a feature for developers using its Codex CLI, enabling them to link their ChatGPT accounts to their API accounts.

While CEO Sam Altman hinted at a “Sign in with OpenAI” feature in 2024, OpenAI is now actively pursuing this capability in 2025.

No additional details or rollout timelines have been released yet.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ SSO landscape now demands strong privacy differentiation

“Sign in with ChatGPT” enters a mature market where privacy has become the key battleground for user authentication services.

Apple’s sign-in service prominently features “privacy nutrition labels” detailing exactly what data apps collect, setting a high bar for transparency in the SSO space 1.

Google has similarly emphasized data minimization principles, requiring third-party apps to explicitly request permission for specific data access rather than granting blanket permissions 2.

These established authentication systems have evolved to prioritize user control. For example, Apple’s system allows users to hide their actual email address from third parties to prevent tracking 3.

For OpenAI to succeed against these entrenched competitors, they’ll need a compelling privacy angle beyond mere convenience, especially as they enter a space where users have grown increasingly concerned about data sharing.

2️⃣ Modern authentication requires robust security transparency

Contemporary sign-in systems have established significant security transparency features that users now expect as standard.
