OpenAI lets users pay for extra videos on Sora tool

OpenAI has started allowing users to buy extra generations, or “gens,” for its Sora video generation tool, said Bill Peebles, the lead of the Sora team at OpenAI, on social media.

The company said high demand from heavy users and the need to support the platform’s operating costs prompted the move.

OpenAI plans to test new monetization features, including options for rightsholders and early users to earn money through the platform.

The company also indicated it may reduce the number of free generations available in the future to manage system capacity.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Sora pricing opacity makes creator income a gamble

  • OpenAI has not shared Sora’s pricing, including how credits map to length or resolution, beyond selling extra gens (video generations) 1.
  • With opaque pricing, creators cannot price a finished piece or compare Sora with Runway (an AI video editor/generator) and Pika (an AI video generation startup), which muddies budgets 1.
  • The add-on model is hard to price since one clip can burn credits based on length or resolution, and OpenAI has not shared unit economics (revenue plus cost per output) 1.
  • OpenAI will trim free quotas, test monetization tools for rightsholders (owners of intellectual property) plus early users, but it has not explained payouts or licensing 1.

Agencies can exploit fragmented AI video pricing

  • As Sora moves from free daily use to paid add-ons with smaller quotas, production teams at agencies and brand studios will face higher costs on Sora 1.
  • A third-party routing service (software that auto-routes work) can compare real-time pricing and performance across Sora, Runway, and Pika, then send prompts to the cheapest or fastest model to cut spend 1.
  • This arbitrage layer (a tool that routes jobs to exploit price or performance gaps) gets stronger if platforms publish per-generation costs plus Application Programming Interface (API) details, while Sora’s per-video credit mapping (how credits translate to video settings) stays opaque 1.
  • Early builders can test demand by surveying creative agencies and post-production shops on monthly AI video spend plus willingness to pay for 20-30% savings through automated routing.
