OpenAI has launched GPT-5-Codex, a new version of its AI model designed specifically for software development tasks within Codex.

Codex integrates with developer tools such as the terminal, IDEs, web, GitHub, and the ChatGPT iOS app.

GPT-5-Codex is now the default model for cloud-based coding tasks and code reviews, accessible through Codex CLI and its IDE extension.

It was trained on real-world engineering work and can handle both interactive sessions and longer, complex coding assignments.

OpenAI reported that GPT-5-Codex showed higher accuracy on code refactoring tasks compared to previous versions.

Recent updates include a unified Codex experience connected to ChatGPT accounts and enhancements to Codex CLI, such as improved tool integration and features to track progress on development tasks.

Codex is available with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans.
