OpenAI launches ChatGPT Go in India at $4.78

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Go, a new subscription tier for its AI chatbot, in India.

ChatGPT Go offers higher usage limits and additional features compared to the free version, including increased message caps, more image generations, larger file uploads, and extended memory.

The service is priced at 399 rupee (US$4.78) and supports payments in Indian rupees via UPI.

OpenAI chose India as the initial market to make ChatGPT subscriptions more accessible and will consider expanding the tier to other countries after gathering user feedback.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Regional pricing strategies unlock massive untapped markets for AI companies

OpenAI’s Rs 399 pricing for ChatGPT Go represents an 80% discount from their existing Plus plan at Rs 1,999, directly responding to user feedback requesting $3-4 pricing to match local purchasing power 1.

This approach aligns with successful regional pricing strategies used by streaming services like Netflix, which users in OpenAI’s community forums had mentioned as a model for making AI tools more accessible in India 1.

The pricing strategy appears well-calibrated to market demand. Indian users had been vocal about the $20 monthly subscription being prohibitive, with many indicating they would switch from free alternatives if pricing aligned with local economic conditions 1.

Given that India now leads global ChatGPT usage with more monthly active users than the US 2, despite representing only 9.42% of traffic compared to the US’s 15.1% 3, the market potential for appropriately priced AI services appears substantial.

2️⃣ India emerges as the primary testing ground for global AI product strategies

OpenAI’s decision to launch ChatGPT Go exclusively in India first, with plans to “learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,” positions India as a strategic proving ground for AI product development.

This approach makes business sense given India’s unique position as the world’s largest ChatGPT user base by monthly active users while maintaining high engagement levels 2.

India’s combination of tech-savvy users, diverse use cases, and price sensitivity provides AI companies with valuable insights that can inform global expansion strategies.

By testing different subscription tiers and payment methods like UPI integration in India first, OpenAI can refine their approach for other emerging markets with similar economic profiles and digital infrastructure.
